Does The Colour Of Your Car Reflect Your Personality

I paid a trip to the mechanics with my partner the other day. My partners car had been making a funny noise because her "Gear Box" had broken and we thought we would ask the mechanic how much it would cost to replace. We were shocked to find that the lowest they could fix it for was £550, when the car itself was only worth around £700.

The car belonged to my partner and I was standing with the mechanic while my partner reversed her "Red Fiat Punto" into the garage. What surprised me more than ever, more than the fact that it would cost so much to fix, was when the mechanic turned around to his partner and said "Another Red Car Mick". This was a funny thing to say I thought, funny and random from a middle aged professional mechanic, so I asked him what he meant by this.

"This is the 7nth red car we have had this week" the mechanic told me. It turned out that he had only had 9 cars in that week and 7 of them were red. I asked him why he thought this was and he told me that the colour of a person's car usually showed some aspects of their personality. People with red cars he informed me were usually wild, aggressive and heavy on the gear stick. I didn't feel the need to defend my partner, who is a great driver and treats her gear stick with the love and handling it deserves. I didn't feel the need as I knew the mechanic was joking lightly about the subject and didn't mean any offence against my partner.

What he wasn't joking about however was the fact that most of the cars he had in that week had been red, so I wondered if there was some truth to his story. After some research I discovered that there was some truth to this. It turned out even insurance company's estimate their prices with drivers on what colour cars they have. A blue car meant that a driver would be relaxed and cool behind the wheel, the owner of a purple car tended to be generous towards other motorists due to their loving and bubbly nature. Owners of Yellow cars were portrayed as fast, free and fun loving while owners of green cars seemed to be very conscientious.

I understand that there is some truth to this but I did point out to the mechanic before I left that people in London rarely got to decide on the colour of their cars, due to the fact they were buying them second hand, and that if my partner had her choice of a new car were she could pick the colour herself it would be Blue as she is in fact a cool and relaxed driver. So is there any truth behind this, who knows. If there is though then it is just another situation were the richer you are, the more selectiveness you may have to picking the colour of your car. Another example were money does allow you to have the power to express your own personality.
